In an attempt to shake off the perils of the past, the family of a notorious criminal escapes to the United States, changes names and starts living a simple and peaceful life. When the son Ivan grows up, he heads back to Russia on a dubious agenda that gives a start to a maelstrom of betrayals, pursuits, family secrets and their disclosures which involve both the mob and the Russian secret services. Ivan has to go through deaths of his comrades, escapes from deadly traps, meetings with new friends and a decisive rescue of his mother to find his path in life.
